All gods are failures! History and the facts prove it!
Zeus, Jupiter, Thor, you name them. All failures!
Yahweh and Jesus? Allah? Total failures!
They can't hold anything together, largely because they are figments of human imagination, illusionary constructs of deluded and often pathological human minds.
Where was Yahweh at Auschwitz and Buckenwald, etc. when his "chosen people" were being slaughtered by the millions? Where was Jesus to stop the "protestant heresy" catholics fought desperately to thwart. Where was he in all the splits and divisions that have torn asunder every major religious movement that came along in christianity, Islam or any other hyped faith that has been invented, all proclaiming they were the true way and everyone else was bound for hell or "the lake of fire?"
You think the odds of winning a lottery are astronomical? The odds and the chances of losing are far greater in the crap shoot of trying to choose something you can cling to as religious "truth." In fact, they are absolutely ZERO!
Where are you going to start?
What wager is guaranteed to pay off?
Why are you so sure you have stumbled on the "winner?"
I've had adherents to my old cult ask to be removed as a "friend" on my Facebook site when they discovered my non-believing stance, all because of their illogical fear of being contaminated by my unbelief in what they still view as the ultimate truth and their ticket into that illusive "kingdom." If I lived in some areas of the South, my life, and certainly my community acceptance, could be in danger if my atheist stance became common knowledge.
I used to be delusional enough to fall for the "You are God's elect" assurance. I was totally convinced I had been specially "called." That mindset afflicts billions of people who are absolutely convinced of their specialness.
Talk about narcissism. Talk about irrationality. If I want to know how dumb a human being can be, all I have to do is look at my own life history.

FREE AT LAST!
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
― Marcus Aurelius
I couldn't say it any better!
When I look back on my life, that's the way I started out thinking in my childhood and early teens. Then, I got caught by a mesmerizing cultic con man and all around sleaze ball by the name of Herbert W. Armstrong. His deceptive cultic system enslaved me for over twenty long years.
It's been a long journey back to basic sanity and clear thinking unencumbered by fairy tales, burdensome religious rigmarole and gospels. Today, I'm free of gods, free of dogma, free of financial slavery to religious machines -- FREE AT LAST -- TOTALLY!
I base my life on humanist ethics and morals. I find those far more of a reliable moral guide than what any religion offers. No longer are my attitudes guided by feelings of superiority toward any other human being. I recognize that we are all cousins somewhere along the genetic pathway and worthy of equal loving respect and concern.
When I was religious, I felt religiously superior to, and thus allienated from all others who were not "in the truth." The nonsense of British Israelism made me feel racially superior as well.
Humanism unites.
Religion and its dogmas divides.
I see that division everywhere. Even in our national politics.
There is a self-righteous haughtiness in politicians like Mitt Romney and Rick Santorium. It virtually exudes from their pores. It's the basis of a lot of their gaffs that give offense to a wide range of people who are different from them.
Today, I'm convinced there are no gods to be concerned about. I haven't made enough of a splash in the world to be long remembered, but that's OK. It's the fate of all my ancestors I'm aware of and the fate of the majority of human beings.
Marcus Aurelius made it into the history books. I currently have a fair presence on Google, but that likely won't last too long after my demise. I don't expect my name in any history books.
At least, the truth that Marcus Aurelius wrote stands. I can only echo it and see that a few more read and comprehend it.

FIT FOR A GOD
I was amused at the meeting Sunday when Richard Dawkins jokingly commented that if he were god, Sedona is where he would want to live. He had never been to Sedona before and I'm certain the spectacular red rock cliff backdrop of the house in which we gathered was overwhelming in its impact.
It got me thinking about how theistic myths about "gods" get started. They always get associated with spectacular and awe inspiring settings. The Greek gods were centered on Mt. Olmpus. I've never seen it, but I'm certain it was awesome, especially in the pristine state it had when the Greeks first settled there. The Sioux of the great plains placed their Great Spirit in the spectacular Black Hills. Arizona Native Americans chose spectacular mountain settings in this state. They are still very contentious about using reclaimed water to make snow on some of those "sacred" sites.
Once we invent a god or gods, he or they have to have some place to reside or make his/their presence known or manifest. Hence temples, sacred groves, mountains, planets, etc. Ancient astrologers peopled the heavens with god-dedicated constellations, planets, whatever. Comets became feared harbingers of doom sent by the gods. Thor was associated with storms from which he hurled his mighty hammer and created lightning.
Cathedrals and other exalted places of worship have to be the most awe-inspiring edifices around. Your god can't reside in a hovel, you know.
Modern day Christians are still impressed by spectacular "sacred" sites. On the whole, they are not inclined to view them as permanent habitations for any of their three gods. They have a more nebulous view of their god being somewhere "up there." I've dealt with that concept in other blogs.
The plain facts of the matter are that all "gods" are conceptual (and/or actual) idols concocted in human minds to explain the mysteries of nature. Their habitations are just as imaginary and illusory as are they.
